Groups & Activities

In addition to the Church services you will find a host of groups and activities that you may care to get involved with. These range from the regular weekly or monthly meetings listed below to the annual ones such as Pilgrimages and Pantomimes. Please keep an eye on either the weekly sheet, available at the Sunday 10pm Parish Eucharist or check out our Diary and upcoming activities page which is regularly updated.

Our regular groups and activities are,

Friends of St. Aldhelms

"The Friends" was launched on St Aldhelm`s day in the year of the 90th celebration of the dedication of our Church. Its purpose was to create an endowment, an omission when the Church was built, to establish a capital sum, the interest on which could be used for the benefit of the Church.

The aims of the society are to provide support to the Church in this parish by all means possible, both spiritually and financially. " The Friends" organise from time to time social activities to enable the members, and others interested, to meet. There is an Annual Meeting at which a chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and three members of the "Friends" are elected to conduct the business of the society in accordance with the Constitution.

There are at present just over 100 members and anyone who is in sympathy with our efforts is welcome to join. To date, "the Friends" have provided a :-

  • A roving microphone
  • Gates to enclose the Church property,
  • The notice board at the North entrance,
  • Floral stands,
  • A £500 donation to the organ fund
  • The loop & sound system in the Church

The annual membership is a modest £1.00 with life membership at £50.00- Please speak to the secretary for more details.

Choir

St. Aldhelm’s has an Adults choir numbering some 16 enthusiastic and loyal members. It meets every Friday for rehearsal in church from 7 – 8pm. The choir has been affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music for many years and leads all the music for the main Sunday services and also at special Feast Day services etc..

There are always vacancies for new singers; if you enjoy singing and can spare two or three hours a week why not think about joining the choir? As for musical ability, if you are a soprano and enjoy singing, don’t worry if you can’t read music terribly well – you may surprise yourself just how quickly you can learn as you go! If however you sing alto, tenor or bass, you would ideally need to be able to read music to a basic level - don’t be put off if you’re a bit rusty though, it will soon come back to you!!

If you are interested in contributing to the worship at St Aldhelm’s in this way please contact Andrew Hill, the Director of Music, via the Parish office.
